Cicho Sza
The evening of poetry "Love Through The Centuries" was an important cultural event for our small Polish community. In the stylish walls of The Elements of Art Gallery, in the candlelight, Cicho Sza assemble recited poems and sang songs dedicated to love. Their program was chosen very well. We heard poems by M. Pawlikowska-Jasnorzewska, A.Mickiewicz, K.I.Galczynski, A.Asnyk, Cz.Milosz, M.Hillar and songs originally sang by E.Piaf, H.Ordonowna, E.Stachura, B.Meca, 2+1. The professional level of the performance and the scenography have charmed and captivated everybody's attention. Even of those not knowing Polish. The atmosphere was romantic and a little mysterious. During the intermission the organizers served delicious wines and cheeses. Some of us missed this event due to the busy summer schedules. We hope that "Love Through The Centuries" will be staged again someday and that this was not the last we have seen of Cicho Sza assemble.

History of Poland in 10 minutes. (gs)

Help us say goodbye to winter and welcome in the spring this year at Marzanna, the fun ritual dating back to the 10th century. In the villages of Poland, a doll-like figure symbolizing winter would be created using straw that had been covering over the fields where crops had grown. It then would be marched away so it could not find its way back, and taken to a river and burned. With winter destroyed, spring could be welcomed in. While we won't be burning anything in the river, we will have a straw figure and a fireplace! Bring food and drinks for a cookout, and be ready for a good time. Be sure to dress for the weather. We have use of a grill and a covered, open shelter. The PAC will provide charcoal. Come to the Big Meadows picnic area of Highbanks Metro Park, on US Rt. 23 N. (about 3mi. north of I-270), March 21st from 2-5 P.M. The park entrance is on the left, just before Powell Rd. Call Marzena with any questions at 614-596-3282. (jm)

On December 11th, after relatively short battle with severe illness, died Dr. Władyslaw Val Metanomski (85), a long-time resident of Columbus, a close friend to many of us. Educated in chemistry-pharmacology, for the last 44 years to the last days of his life, Dr. Metanomski worked at Chemical Abstracts, owned by the American Chemical Society, where he was highly regarded and liked for his knowledge, outstanding diligence, friendliness and mild temper, as well as for his gallantry to ladies ("a real gentleman"). He was also known for his love and knowledge of opera and classical music, history and (with proper moderation) good wine. Born and raised in prewar Lwow, during the Polish campaign of September 1939 he was taken prisoner by the Red Army and sent to labor camp in Siberia. He managed to get out by joining the Polish Army formed by Gen. Anders. With the Anders Army he left the Soviet Union and - after transit through Iran, Iraq and Palestine to join the British and Americans - he took part in the famous Monte Cassino Battle and the in the rest of the Italian campaign. After the war ended he settled in England for university studies and work, then he transferred to Canada for more education, and finally he moved with his wife to Columbus, to join the CAS. He is survived by his wife Helena, his daughter and her husband, and two grandchildren. The Funeral Mass - with good music by the Church choir and solo singers - was celebrated at the St. Andrew Catholic Church in Columbus, followed by the reception. The participants included Dr. Val's family and many his co-workers and friends. He will be missed and remembered. (gs)

We were located very close to the main stage this time, therefore no one had to miss any of the interesting shows. The performance by "Lajkonik" was especially worthy of our attention - beautiful show and, most importantly, many more familiar faces!

• One more picnic "At the Barn" behind us. For most of us it started at noon with a soccer tournament among our fellows from Columbus, Cincinnati and Cleveland. After few hours of a hard competitive game we had a winner: Columbus, 2nd runner up-Cleveland, 1st runner up-Cincinnati. Wonderful weather, tastefully diversified food and great atmosphere made the day another great experience. While PAC supplied hot dogs, Zywiec and keg beer, quests were asked to bring a dish to share. We all enjoyed pleasant music - special thanks to Darek, the DJ. Unfortunately, most of the gentlemen did not want to show off their dancing skills due to maximized exploitation on a soccer filed. Children occupied the dance floor. Kids, you are the best!!! We want to thank you all for coming and having a great time. Special thanks to guests from Cleveland (with priest Jurek), and from Cincinnati, who arrived with Andrzej and Ted. We hope we will have many more wonderful meetings like this in the future.

Happy Father's Day!

father
God took the strength of a mountain,
The majesty of a tree,
The warmth of a summer sun,
The calm of a quiet sea,
The generous soul of nature,
The comforting arm of night,
The wisdom of the ages,
The power of the eagle's flight,
The joy of a morning in spring,
The faith of a mustard seed,
The patience of eternity,
The depth of a family need,
Then God combined these qualities,
When there was nothing more to add,
He knew His masterpiece was complete,
And so,

He called it ... Dad

It was the sixth time we met at the summer camp organized by PAC. The weather was perfect thanks to our wizard Janek. As always, all campers had a lot of fun. No one complained about a lack of attractions. Tents, a fireplace, group singing, Polish food, good humor and of course sport games made the camping a huge hit. Unfortunately, the writer of this article was not present and couldn't enjoy the summer camp atmosphere. All comments are "second hand informations" (thank you - informers). This time, aside volleyball, badminton and soccer, we could play table tennis as well (ping-pong). Another new attraction was a door price draw. Prices were founded by PAC sponsors. Congratulations to all winners. I think we all are winers being part of this great organized event. See you next year!

Corpus Christi
JUNE 10, 2007

On Saturday June 10th, after a traditional Polish mass, the Corpus Christi procession took place. After the mass, within the quarters of German Village, father Andrew Knapik with the help of Ela an alter helper, led a procession with the Holy Communion. Following the traditions, along the path awaited us four alters decorated in flowers and fresh willow tree twigs. The girls dropped rose pedals as the people of the procession sang Evangelical words. The weather, as usual, was beautiful. It hit home for many people, reminding them of the familiar tradition. It was beautiful, traditional, and very Polish.

At the Zaleski Park gathered the bravest people and they lasted. For those who prefer the comfort of being close to home, this was not for them. And because of this they did not get to see our friends from Cincinnati and Cleveland. It was worth it to drive through the town, where we had an acre of land just to ourselves. We lived through the rain fall, we fixed cars "at the end of the world", and had original techniques of telephoning the outside world. Nearby were a Polish-style lake and beautiful walking and bike paths. This trip truly turned out to be a battle with nature.

The strong effort of PAC for the past few months has resulted in the return of Polish Holy Mass to Columbus. Meetings, conversations, petitions, changing from Plan A to Plan B, then to Plan C... Inaugurating Holy Mass in Polish took place on Palm Sunday 2007, in ideal weather. It was very joyful, friendly and family oriented. Father Eryk Orzech of Cleveland, with the help of Kinga, Jurek, and Michal, led us through the Gospel of the Passion of Christ according to St. Luke. With the support of Kinga and Janek’s voices, we filled the German Village church with polish songs. Holy Communion, blessing of the Easter Palms; it was quite beautiful and unforgettable. Everything that happened up to that day was for us, about us, in us, with us. God Bless!

FANTASTIC NEWS! The activity of "The Polish-American Club in Columbus" brought attention of the media. Local TV station WBNS-10TVNews will broadcast the celebration of the Polish Palm Sunday from the German Village church.

    Marzanna
    MARCH 18th, 2007

    1

With the goal of chasing away the winter season, our bravest souls arrived at Highbanks Park on Sunday. With prior experience of drowning and burning the symbol of winter, this year's event took place very smoothly. Marzanna was still spitting fire and smoke at us from the fireplace; nothing we couldn't handle. Even though it was nice and sunny, the planned Spring Sports were disrupted by the cold wind. Perhaps it was through the smoke of Marzanna that the winter succeeded in slightly taking over. Or perhaps we weren't united enough, missing our Guitar Man. Wacek, where are you !?!?!?!

    paczki
To those that arrived at Krystyna’s Deli on Saturday after 2:30 pm, we apologize. Instead of fresh Paczki, they were greeted with a sign reading "SOLD OUT". Almost 600 Paczki, made by the talented Master Mirek, sold like hotcakes. The sale lasted only 1.5 hours, instead of 4 hours as planned. At least the hard working volunteers did not miss out on the delicious treats. Those helping Master Mirek had the opportunity to feast on the hot Paczki, fresh out of the oven, whose taste they will not soon forget. Thanks to the dedication of our chef and his helpers, as well as the hosts and owners of Krystyna's Deli, a lot of Polish homes in Ohio were able to continue their tradition: bidding farewell to the Carnival with a delicious feast.

Quotation of the Century: "In the first place, we should insist that if the immigrant who comes here in good faith becomes an American and assimilates himself to us, he shall be treated on an exact equality with everyone else, for it is an outrage to discriminate against any such man because of creed, or birthplace, or origin. But this is predicated upon the person's becoming in every facet an American, and nothing but an American...There can be no divided allegiance here. Any man who says he is an American, but something else also, isn't an American at all. We have room for but one flag, the American flag... We have room for but one language here, and that is the E nglish language... and we have room for but one sole loyalty and that is a loyalty to the American people." Theodore Roosevelt '1907 (aj)

    Polish Wigilia
    DECEMBER 9th, 2006

Ho, ho, ho - that's what Santa said when he joined our Wigilia on December 9th at the Eagles! About 280 people showed up at the event this year, which set the Wigilia's attendance record in the XXI century!
It was amazing to see so many seasoned and new club members joining us for this special evening. Since there is always place at Polish table for unexpected guests, we certainly welcomed many non-club members who joined us. We hope that they liked what they have seen and maybe decide to join the club at some point; we hope that new club members were able to make some acquaintances and we hope that we all have seen some friends we have not seen for a while.

Thank you we all really appreciate your time and commitment to this event.

PAC President's Message to All Our Children:
I want you to know that I have had the opportunity to speak to St. Mikolaj (also known as Santa Claus)! He is very excited about the holidays this year and he told me he would love to come celebrate with us at our Wigilia party on December 9th. He also said the he will be bringing gifts for all our good little girls and boys! I told him that the children of our club are all wonderful children and that I think all of you have been good this year, so now it is up to you to keep up your good work. Be sure to mind your manners and be a helper to your mom and dad. Keep your room clean and study hard. I will see you at the party, when well all sing Christmas carols, have good things to eat, and have lots of holiday fun.
    Your friend, Mike Moore

    Camping
    AUGUST 4 - 6, 2006

This time in the Alum Creek State Park we met in a much younger group. The average age decreased with Alexander, who at the last camping trip in May was still in his moms belly. It was fun, filled with sports (thanks to Peter and Martin for introducing water sports to our event) and was somewhat surrealistic (during the night). Like every other time, it was sunny and hot. Even the volleyball players were complaining that it was too hot. I suppose to comply to their needs we will have the next camping trip February 2007. See you then!

    • An Eagle Scout, Peter Kilanowski, is doing a project that highlights a monument to a Revolutionary War hero, Thaddeus Kosciuszko
( "Dublin Villager" edition on 07/27/2006, page 01A NEWS ). On Sunday the 13th of August, we will celebrate with the raising of a Polish Flag at this newely renovated monument.
The Article: Revolutionary War POLISH HERO'S MONUMENT GETS FACELIFT By MICHAEL RACEY A local Eagle Scout is doing a project that celebrates his Polish heritage and highlights a little-known monument to a Revolutionary War hero in Dublin. "My Eagle Scout project is in two parts, involving the historical monument to Thaddeus Kosciuszko on Riverside Drive in my community," said Peter Kilanowski, a 17-year-old senior at Dublin Coffman High School. The first part of the project involved Kilanowski leading a team that spent last weekend refurbishing the historical site on Riverside, including masonry repairs and the replacement of a rusted flag pole. While he may not be a household name locally, more than 241,000 entries can be found by typing the name of Thaddeus -- or Tadeusz, the Polish spelling of his first name -- Kosciuszko (pronounced Kos-choos-ko) into Google, the Web search engine. "Kosciuszko was a Polish military general and strategist who came to America to fight in the Revolutionary War," Kilanowski said. "He was the designer of the protection of West Point and also Saratoga." West Point was a key fort for the colonists, and their successful campaign against the British at Saratoga is seen as a major turning point in the war that saw France enter the revolution on the colonies' behalf, according to The World Book Encyclopedia. "At the conclusion of the war, Kosciuszko was given a 500-acre land grant in Ohio and cash for his service to America," Kilanowski said. The amount of money given to Kosciuszko for his war service was $15,227.87, according to www.ushistory.org. "The monument on Riverside Drive marks the northern boundary of the land grant that he received. Upon his death, the named executor of his will, his friend, Thomas Jefferson, was instructed to sell this land and the money (be) used to free and educate black slaves," Kilanowski said. Jefferson called Kosciuszko "As pure a son of liberty as I have ever known." Kosciuszko died in Switzerland in 1817. There is a national monument to the Revolutionary War hero in Philadelphia. Next month, the Polish American Club of Columbus will present Kilanowski with a Polish flag to raise at the renovated Riverside Drive monument. The second part of Kilanowski's project will involve raising local awareness of the monument by posting information at the Dublin Community Recreation Center and getting books donated to the Dublin branch of the Columbus Metropolitan Library. "I have received book donations to be given to the Dublin branch of our local library as there are currently no (local) holdings on this American Revolutionary War hero," Kilanowski said. To help pay for the project, he received donations to help with the project from The Kosciuszko Foundation Inc. and The American Center for Polish Culture, as well as from family members. After a nice lunch together in a quiet restaurant, we watched a very moving movie in a library room:

This year, WINTER put up a fight. It brought low temperatures, strong winds, and hale. But the Poles are tough. We didn't get intimidated by the terrible weather. Full of energy, the PAC members gathered for the spring festivities. The children were equipped with colorful fans and bouquets of flowers. Matthew - the oldest of the kids - holding a poster, encouraged everyone to cheer together "WINTER, GO AWAY!" and "ZIMO, IDZ SOBIE!". We led Marzanna along winding paths through the forest, so that she wouldn't find her way back. We then threw the puppet off the bridge and drowned her in the river. Finally, we burned her. Immediately, it got warmer, the sun came out, and flowers started to bloom. Welcome long awaited SPRING!

    Polish Wigilia
    DECEMBER 17th, 2005

Over 200 people participated in our 2005 Wigilia! We have never seen Eagles Hall decorated so tastefully and with such a Christmas spirit. Kudos for the Young's, the Klarenbach's, Luba, the Myszkowski's, Janice and everybody else who helped with this event. Thank you for Tomek and Wacek for live Christmas music and thank you Santa for stoping by! Tables were full of traditional meatless dishes: pierogies with sauerkraut and mashrooms, salmon, greek fish, herring, beets, mashroom soup, tuna and egg salad, potato salad, poppyseed strudels, kutia and lamaniec, cheescake, babka, faworki and many more. Food was one of a kind and truly delicious, and ... there was plenty of it - thank you everybody! Before the supper we

have shared the Oplatek and exchanged Christmas wishes. It was great to see so many of the Club members showing up, having really good time and having opportunity to socialize with friends right before this very special time of the year - Christmas and New Year. I have already heard that thanks to the great food and atmosphere people are already looking forward to the next Wigilia - this one was perfect and people loved it! Robert (rb)

    Columbus International Festival 2005
    NOVEMBER 4 - 6, 2005

Members, families, and friends of the PAC, I salute you for a job well done representing us at the 50th Annual International Festival...
    ----
"I never knew that there were so many Polish people in Columbus!" a visitor to the International Festival was heard to exclaim. When that comment was passed on to me, I realized that our goal at the festival - to let the central Ohio community know that we are here, that we are active and that we value our Polish heritage - was being accomplished. Everyone who contributed in any way should be very proud, and I thank you all for your participation - from S. Vingle article in December's CoNowego newsletter. Overall the 2005 UN Festival was a very successful event for the Polish American Club, we've had a tremendous group of volunteers who made it possible! (rb)

    The 25th anniversary of PAC
    24 WRZESIEN '2005

    1

The 25th anniversary of PAC is behind us. The location, the atmosphere, the spirit, and the turn-out were all impressive for this important occasion. Marysia and Maryla, the organizers of the celebration, did an outstanding job; hats off to you, ladies. PS. If you have pictures from the "Celebration of Polish Heritage" event, we ask you to send them to us. We need you to keep the good memories alive.

I cannot say enough about the elegant celebration hosted by Maria Juncewicz and Maryla Teresk last month. Thank you to you both and congratulations on its success. Everything about it, the beautiful room, the centerpieces on the tables, the party favors, the delicious food, and the wonderful band, all made for a magical evening. I could not help but feel touched by the sentiment we were all sharing, that we have so much to be proud of, being part of this Polish community. It was a truly joyous event and it noted the fact that having had the PAC in existence for twenty-five years, there were a lot of people to thank and recognize for their contributions.

    Janice Marshall

    ----
... "The year 2005 has been a very remarkable year. Many significant events took place - some sad ones, like the loss of our beloved Pope John Paul II, who was our inspiration and a source of national pride, who guided us and gave us strength and courage to go on, and to strive peacefully for a better tomorrow.

This year in August, Poland and Poles all over the world celebrated the 25th Anniversary of the Solidarity movement. That remarkable August of 1980 at the Gdansk shipyard, a seed was planted, which had an enormous and amazing impact on Poland and Eastern Europe. The fruit of that seed was the collapse of the communist system and slow but firm changes, bringing freedom and democracy to Poland and a hope for a better future for the younger generation of Poles.

On the home front we also have something to be joyful about - a small celebration honoring our Polish heritage. Though this is not an official function of the PAC, you cannot talk about Polish community in Columbus without mentioning the club. Many of us here are longtime members who maintained and carried on our Polish culture, traditions and customs as part of this organization. The Polish American Club was founded in May of 1980 by Walt Metka and John Pupa, and this year it is celebrating its 25th anniversary as well. In my opinion, it was a marriage made in heaven - for better for worse, for richer for poorer, in sickness and in health, and though there were many of those latter ones, we also had many wonderful, happy, and memorable moments. And when some older members couldn't be so active any more and some of us burnt out, there were always some new faces which stepped in to help out - like in recent years, GLORIA and TIM KUJAWA, who served as officers, who were in charge of many events and helped any way they could, like JAN LABANOWSKI, who was in charge of our membership list, an editor of our newsletter Co Nowego, and very instrumental in changing our tax status, like our 2 Teresas TERESA MOREY and TERESA PACZULA, who baked and cooked and worked at the festivals and dances, like MALGOSIA and JOHN KMIEC, who served as officers in the club, helped to organized various club function, and John was also an editor of Co Nowego like JANICE MARSHALL who took over Co Nowego and is in charge of it till today. Janice also diligently helps at the festivals and dances, like REGINA GRYWASKI, who organized our Youth Club, Polish language classes taught by BASIA McCARTNEY, and many educational, social and fun activities for our youngest ones, so they can get to know their roots and customs and carry them on to the next generation.
There are many more, and I cannot mention everybody because you would have to listen to me for at least a week and I am sure you don't want to do that.
But there is a special group of individuals who in my mind went beyond the call of duty and did so much for the Polish community in Columbus and the club. These individuals unselfishly devoted their time, resources, energy and talents to promote Polish culture and traditions as part of the PAC.
When I mention your name please come up here so everyone can know exactly who you are. And I will ask you to hold your applause till the end when I am finished.
The number one person, of course, is WALT METKA, the founder of The PAC. Walt was indispensable, past President many times over, served as an officer in other capacities, danced in our folk dance group, organized picnics, festivals and dances, searched for and booked the bands, worked in the food booth, got supplies and food items for different functions, and had a small Polish program on a local radio station. This club is in his blood, it's like his baby. He did a lot, and thanks to him we had a Polish organization in Columbus, Ohio which newcomers with Polish roots could join if they chose to, and enjoy their Polish heritage.
No club's function involving food could take place without this amazing couple, MARYSIA and JOHN JUNCEWICZ, our head chef and bar director. Marysia made golabki, pierogi, baked, she organized kitchen supplies, pots and pans, made sure that everything was in operating condition, set up the cooking stations, made sure that the food was cooked to the right temperature, and always with a smile on her face, never cross with anyone. She weathered any problems or difficulties we encountered, like a power outage, blown up fuses or shortage of some supplies. And John, helping with set ups, making deliveries, bring food, taking things to storage, traveling to Cleveland to buy sausage or paczki for our Paczki Ball in February, serving drinks at the dances and festivals, always watching for sales on pop, to buy at the lowest possible price so the club could make the most profit.
And just 2 steps behind them are their partners in crime, their close kitchen associates, WANDA and WALTER BALIJ. Wanda always quietly standing in front of the frying skillet, flipping the pierogi so they are crispy and golden brown and cooked to perfection, always listening to her boss Marysia - "Yes Marysia, whatever you say Marysia." Wanda helped with raffle tickets and cleanup at dances. She sang in our Polish choir. Walter, like John, helped with supplies and deliveries, he worked at the food booth, at picnics grilling sausage, he helped with Polish masses, and he sang in the choir. And of course his most important role -he is our famous Polish Mikolaj - Santa Claus. Mrs. Claus was always concerned with Santa's attire. She wanted him to look presentable for our Polish children, so twice she bought a new suit for Santa and donated it to the club. Santa was very popular not only with the children but also with the ladies who loved to sit on his lap and whisper their wishes, hoping that their husbands would overhear them and finally this year they will get what they really want for Christmas - and not a fishing pole or another frying pan! I remember one time when we got home after a Wigilia party when my son said to me "Mom I know who the Santa Claus is. It's not that guy from the North Pole. It's Mr. Balij." Finally the cat was out of the bag for him.
And what would this club be without our own STAS VINGLE? Stan, past president and trustee also did a lot, as our PR person and media representative. Through channel 10, he helped to advertise our functions on TV, he sent announcements and advertisements to all the local newspapers and parish bulletins, and he chaired various functions. But his biggest contribution is defending the good name of the Polish people. If there was any slander, any anti- Polonism, a Polish joke, or distorted historical facts, Stan fought with his biggest weapon, his pen. A very eloquent writer, Stan wrote articles, editorials, complaints, and clarifications, so the bias was exposed and Poles could get the respect and consideration they deserve.
JAN CZEKAJEWSKI is another person who does it. And, as with many of the members, when you start to organize something, you seem stuck with it for the rest of your life! That's how Stan is with the United Nations Festival. He started to chair the cultural booth at the festival, and today he is still doing it. Stan you do know the best. You've done it so many times.
Getting back to our catering business, no kitchen operation could be complete without our gourmet cook and fantastic baker, JOSEPHINE CEWE, to many of us Ziuta. God knows how many cabbage rolls she made, how many pierogis she pinched, how many cookies she baked, how many cakes she frosted and, all to benefit the club. Surprisingly, her husband hasn't divorced her since she cooked and baked more for the club than for him! She worked at the dances, festivals, next to Marysia and Wanda making sure that everything was running smoothly. Ziuta also has another talent. She is our singing Polish diva. What would our choir do without her lovely voice?
And I cannot go on without mentioning DICK JONES, past president, secretary, trustee - you name it, he's done it. Any hole or a gap which needed to be filled, Dick was there to fill. He chaired many events, helped to organize children's games at the picnics, and got supplies. Even today he probably has beer pitchers in his trunk. And like Stan Vingle, he was doing the International Festival! Dick also has a special function planning the blessing of our Easter baskets. He started to arrange it, ands till today, regardless whether the club asks him or not, he makes arrangements so we can uphold this beautiful Easter tradition. And frequently he even gets, "Dick, you didn't reserve the social hall for the reception", "The time wasn't right", "The announcement was too late". Dick knows first hand how hard is to please Polish people, especially Polish women! And, there is one more secret about Dick you may not know - if you want a good recipe for pierogi, or instructions how to make them, ask Dick. He is an expert by now. One time, I organized pierogi making in my church for the club to have extra supplies for upcoming events, with of course, everything under the leadership and expertise of Ziuta Cewe. Dick was the only guy there. I am surprised that he is still alive – all those women bossing him around saying, "Dick, this" and, "Dick, that" - but he survived - and he knows how to make pierogi!
And last but not least is my husband, JERRY TERESK, a past president and a dancer in the folk dance group. The guy didn't know what oberek and krakowiak were until he met me - and then he had to do all those crazy gyrations, jumps and kicks in a funny costume in front of audiences! Jerry chaired many functions and organized children's games. He also had a special function – reserving Anheuser Busch Park for our August family style picnic. Regardless whether he was asked, in January he would reserve the park for us. We had a lot of fun at those picnics, playing tennis, volleyball, horseshoes, the kids enjoying the playground, catching up with one another, grilling sausage and hamburgers and drinking beer to our hearts' desire.
Jerry also organized many Polish masses - for Immaculate Conception, Polish Thanksgiving masses, Palm Sunday, May 3rd mass, a beautiful, solemn mass commemorating the 200th anniversary of the Polish Constitution of May 3rd (which we had downtown in St. Joseph's Cathedral, celebrated by Monsignor Milewski from Orchard Lake), and several Corpus Christi masses with procession and 4 outdoor alters.
Not only did he have to put up with me, and that's a challenge as many may know, as choir director, he had to deal with all those singing ladies. The music was written one way but, "Jerry, in Limanowa we sing it like that, in Lomza we sing it like this, in Wroclaw or Krakow we sing it like that". Jerry rewrote the music and explained to the organist, "Mary, I know that the music is written like this, but the ladies are going to sing it like that". Somehow he managed to make everybody happy.
There are also some people I would like to recognize who are not with us here tonight, and some who are no longer with us. DOLORES DiCENZO, very active in the club, baked tons of desserts for the club, worked at the festivals, organized Polish masses, and sang in the choir, and her deceased husband, RICHARD DiCENZO, who passed away this past Christmas. Richard, though having Italian roots, felt very Polish. He asked everyone not to call him Dicenzo but Dicenzowski! He even had business cards made with this name! Richard loved our pope and, as a musician, he wrote a song in his honor to the melody of the Polish national anthem. We sang it at one of our masses. Jerry encouraged Richard to send it to Rome, which he did, and he received thanks and an acknowledgement from the Vatican.
HELEN DUDA, a great cook and baker donated many sweets. Many of us remember her plum cake and frequently we were asked, especially at the Worthington festival, "Do you have that plum cake you had last year? It was so good." Helen and her husband CASEY DUDA both worked at festivals and dances. Casey was also a trustee and a singer in our choir. We will never forget the bus trip they organized to the shrine in Bellvue, Ohio for the Polish Day. We had a blast. We sang on the bus, we played games and we participated in a spiritual program scheduled that day and enjoyed lunch together.
PETE and ANN ZELLER - Pete was on our Building Committee and his dream was to obtain a permanent building for the club. Unfortunately, it didn’t materialize. Their daughter, BETTY ZELLER was also very active. They, together with JAYNE YOUNG, Walt Metka's daughter, started the folk dance group. They were directors, dancers themselves and choreographers. They also started the children’s dance group.
SYLVIA and JIM MARKS also very active, worked tirelessly on picnics and festivals. Jim, a past treasurer, always thought about new ways to make and save money for the club. LEONARD FRONCZAK, MIKE LABUDA and our recent loss, JOE and ANN PIETRUSZEWSKI, were very active in the club, working at dances and festivals. I will never forget this image of Joe at the Worthington Festival grilling sausage on the portable grill, and dancing to the Polish music playing in the background. And of course TOMEK and DANUTA HERZYK who as newcomers, joined the club right away and became very active helping to organize many functions. Unfortunately Tomek is no longer with us and Danuta lives presently in the Philadelphia area. She sends her best wishes to everyone. We are grateful to all of them for all the contribution and help.

Getting back to our honorees, please make sure that you thank them personally, that you express your appreciation and gratitude for their hard work and dedication to the Polish community and the Polish American Club. Serdeczne Bog Zaplac! They deserve a big round of applause".

    The Patriots Day Members Picnic
    SEPTEMBER 11th, 2005

The Patriots Day Members picnic went off without a hitch in a beautiful park in Grove City (The Heimat Haus, 4555 Jackson Pike). The weather and the attendance definitely did not disappoint. The Tom Katrenich Orchestra played for nearly the entire time. We were blessed with a pleasant atmosphere, great food, a beautifully adorned Heimat Haus, and on top of all this, Ted's wonderful wine and the opportunity to purchase various Polish products. We hope that the organizational committee had a chance to recoup after all their hard work in organizing the event. - We Thank You for all your hard work! P.S. We ask that photos from the event be sent to the Website, without them, we will not be able to create a separate page devoted to the festivities of September 11th.

"Polish Madonnas in Art and Poetry" is a collection of 50 paintings by Wislawa Kwiatkowska from the Diocesan Museum in Plock, Poland. The inspiration for the paintings came from selected texts of Polish poetry. It is important to note that from the earliest beginnings of Polish literature (see: "Bogarodzica", the hymn sung by the knights in the Battle of Grunwald in 1410) to the present day, Polish poetry often is inspired by the Holy Mother.
A characteristic of Mrs. Kwiatkowska work is to join the picture, painted on canvas cloth, with the frame, which eliminates the distance between the work and the viewer. The pictures are painted in oil and measure 90 x 75 cm each.

    The Spring Fling Dance
    APRIL 30th, 2005

Wow!! What happened? The "New" nor the "Old" Polonia saw this coming. Hundreds of people came to the "Polka Dance" ( we had to add extra tables), the dance floor was covered, and the band "Pan Franek, Zosia & The Polka Towners" convinced even the most resistant people to dance. The Ladies in the kitchen worked in two shifts, and were incredibly busy. Our Treasurer, aided by the former and present PAC Presidents had trouble keeping up with collecting admission for the event. The raffle, organized by Danusia and Marzena, went amazingly; tickets were sold at an olympic speed. Congratulations to those who organized the event!! We can't wait for more events like this one!!

    • The Spring Fling Dance is coming up. During this event we will have a raffle, and we need you to search high and low for prizes that you may be willing to donate for this lottery. If you have something in mind already, great. If not it will help to gather this info to our page or to somebody from PAC officers. If it is possible, send along a digital picture of the item(s) you are donating. Tax refundable receipts are available for your donations. Thanks and hope to see you at the dance.

    • Our correspondent says that Sunday, May 1st at 1:30 PM in Cleveland will take place annual Polish "May 3rd March". Our group will be very welcome. There will be a Mass at 10:00AM (before the March) at St. Stanislaus Church. All who are interested please contact Dariusz or Roman (see: Executive Committee) or our website. (dm)

Dime-A-Dog Night, another opportunity to join fanes of our baseball team Columbus Clippers with tasting of hotdogs for only $0.10 will take place on Monday, 05/23/2005 at 7:05PM. Tickets: adults: $5 / children: $3. Game: Columbus Clippers vs. Syracuse Sky Chiefs. (en)

    • For our big dance coming up on April 30th, we can use some help setting up tables the night before, stripping down tables after the dance, and in the kitchen during the dance. Please call Maria Juncewicz at 231-8160 if you can spare a little time. Everyone‘s help is so appreciated. Thank you in advance, if you are a volunteer.

We are having elections on April 13th , therefore the list of officers on the PAC page is changed. The PAC has many new members bringing with them their ideas and enthusiasm. We look forward to expanding our offerings, as a result.
"There is not a way to overstate all that Walt Metka has done to keep our club alive over the years. Without him we would not be in existence. It has been a difficult job, and a sometimes thankless one, one that a person does because he believes in something and wants it to go on. Walt put his heart into the PAC and managed to keep things going with the help of a very small group of devoted and hard working members. Walt, you have been the driving force behind the PAC and with that we can only say, "Thank you for carrying us here." We have now had our elections, as planned, and some new names will be found on the back page listing of club officers and trustees. We welcome our new president Roman Nitze and are grateful for all the enthusiasm he now brings, as well as looking forward to some new offerings the PAC will have for its members along with having our dances. We thank Barb Young for accepting a nomination and subsequent re-election as vice president. Barb ran several "busy" meetings for us this past year and worked very hard for the club. Also, we are welcoming Robert Brzezinski as our new treasurer and Luba Kowalski as our new secretary, with our gratitude for taking on those jobs. Congratulations to all of you, and to all the newly elected trustees: Stan Vingle, Eva Klarenbach, Tim Kujawa, Dariusz Mikulski, and Dick Jones. With the growing list of new members, many of them from Poland, I have seen at our meetings a new energy emerging and a gratitude that the PAC was here to be found, so that we can all join together to enjoy our heritage. As one of our new members said aloud during a discussion on PAC election night, "One Polonia, we are all one!"

    † Pope John Paul II (18.05.1920 - 02.04.2005)

The Mass held at the Saint Joseph Cathedral in Honor of Pope John Paul II was unusually special. Columbus Bishop Frederick F. Campbell presided at the memorial Mass flanked by 150 priests and deacons of the diocese.
In ancient Latin, the choir sang mournful -- but hopeful -- hymns, asking that the dead be spared punishment and brought to eternal peace.

After the holy Mass, we sang our Pope's favorite song "Barka". Prayers were said in our names by Stanley (in English) and by Maryla T (in Polish). Bishop Campbell asked that we sing one more song, which he sang with us, "Serdeczna Matko".
The polish community came out in unusually large numbers, and represented The Polish-American Club with pride. As agreed, everyone came wearing white and red ribbons over their hearts.

Farewell to Pope John Paul II, Columbus, April 8th, 2005

With painful hearts we are saying farewell to you, our Holy Father. We know that you are not suffering any more and you are in a better place at the side of our Father. We are left in sorrow and with empty hearts grieving the loss of our dear friend, which we had in you, our beloved Father, and our great countryman who turned the eyes of the world to our country, Poland and us.
You were and always will be a source of our pride and joy. We are eternally grateful and we thank you for everything you have done for us Poles, for our faith, and for every human being. We believe that you will always watch over us, guide us, and give us strength in difficult times.
We pray for you and we entrust you to the providence and love of Jesus Christ and Mary, Mother of God. May God bless our Pope John Paul II . Farewell our beloved Father.
